We bought a house. It is beautiful, and I love everything about it, but – there is no fireplace. No where to hang the stockings, display precious keepsakes, or put the holiday decor. So what to do? I needed a fire place. So I purchased a fireplace surround.
I put the surround and mantle up, and it sat there. Blank wall, (with an outlet in it and fireplace around it. There is no place to actually put a fireplace in my house, it just wouldn’t work. But I needed to find some wonderful idea of what to put in my fire place! Most importantly, there was an outlet in the actual area I needed to convert to something, so I needed to “bump out the area.”
I had lots of ideas:
- leave it
- I could go on and on…
But something wasn’t right. And then “click,” I have an almost 2 year old. Let’s make it a felt board so we can do stories AND have a “fire” all in one day if I wanted.
I started by inserting foam board into the fireplace opening (bound together with white duct tape. I had to bump out the board to take care of the outlet situation. The entire thing is removable for when I need to plug in things like the Christmas Tree, and should be deep enough (I hope) to have the tree timer set up for the lights!
Next was the fun part, decorating it!
I purchased a big sheet of black felt, and centered it on the fire. Adhering it with hot glue.
Now it did not perfectly square up, but I solved this problem by making “tiles” to go around. I measured them out to be 5.25″x 5.25″ to catch the widest gaps, and put them all around the edge. I had to trim the middle pieces so they lined up and looked nice.
Then I cut out some felt wood and flames to make it complete!
and “ta da” an instant fireplace!
A simple way, to add a little light in the room, and a fun place to play.
peace. love. dove.
