Felt Board Fireplace

Felt Board Fireplace

We bought a house. It is beautiful, and I love everything about it, but – there is no fireplace. No where to hang the stockings, display precious keepsakes, or put the holiday decor. So what to do? I needed a fire place. So I purchased a fireplace surround.

I put the surround and mantle up, and it sat there. Blank wall, (with an outlet in it and fireplace around it. There is no place to actually put a fireplace in my house, it just wouldn’t work. But I needed to find some wonderful idea of what to put in my fire place! Most importantly, there was an outlet in the actual area I needed to convert to something, so I needed to “bump out the area.”

I had lots of ideas:

  1. Lanterns
  2. Whiteboard
  3. Wood
  4. glitter
  5. paint
  6. leave it
  7. I could go on and on…

But something wasn’t right. And then “click,” I have an almost 2 year old. Let’s make it a felt board so we can do stories AND have a “fire” all in one day if I wanted.

I started by inserting foam board into the fireplace opening (bound together with white duct tape. I had to bump out the board to take care of the outlet situation. The entire thing is removable for when I need to plug in things like the Christmas Tree, and should be deep enough (I hope) to have the tree timer set up for the lights!

Next was the fun part, decorating it!

I purchased a big sheet of black felt, and centered it on the fire. Adhering it with hot glue.

Now it did not perfectly square up, but I solved this problem by making “tiles” to go around. I measured them out to be 5.25″x 5.25″ to catch the widest gaps, and put them all around the edge. I had to trim the middle pieces so they lined up and looked nice.

Then I cut out some felt wood and flames to make it complete!

and “ta da” an instant fireplace!

A simple way, to add a little light in the room, and a fun place to play.

peace. love. dove.

Sometimes you need a break.

I had a year of complete change. I had my little one turn ONE, I started a new job in direct sales, we moved from Hawaii to Florida, bought our first house, and adjusted to our new location and schedule. With two trips to the midwest in the span of a month and a half. I needed a break.

I took a month of from my Direct Sales business, and it left me time to create. Find myself, find my beautiful passion for crafting back. With January coming to complete, I am so excited I already made an entire quilt, and have a project to quilt lined up for next month already.

Life has to start again, and not that its not starting, I am just still visiting my family. I want to get started on more projects. I would love to get back into being on design teams, and I want to create!

My goal for this year is ME. I want to make things for ME. Complete projects for ME. Do what I want to do. It’s all about balance. This is the year, this is the time, and it is actually going to happen. I am going to make it happen. I am going to get out my Silhouette, and finally play with it! I am going to use my sewing machine every month. I am going to try new techniques. I am going to work on losing weight. I am going to do it because I want to! I am turning off the TV, walking away from the computer, and using my brain every day for ME.

yep, thats me!

until next week, when I am back with more projects made!
